Gas leaks

Smell gas? Here’s what to do right now

Read the safety advice first. Only approach the meter if it is safe, and call from a safe location outside the affected area.

If you smell gas

Do not use electrical switches, phones or flames in the affected area. If safe, turn off the gas at the meter and open doors and windows. Keep people away and leave the affected area. From a safe location, immediately call the gas emergency number on your gas bill. Call 000 if there is immediate danger. Do not turn the gas back on until it has been checked and you are advised it is safe.

How to turn off your gas supply safely

  1. Find your gas meter. It is usually at the front of the property or around the side of the house. Only approach it if it is safe to do so.
  2. Close the isolation tap. If safe, turn off the isolation tap at the meter to stop the flow of gas to the property. Do not turn the supply back on yourself.
  3. Contact Emmett Plumbing. Once everyone is safe and you have reported the leak to your gas distributor, call 0419 698 619 to book an appointment or ask for advice.

Not an emergency, but something is not right?

  • A faint gas smell near an appliance or the meter
  • Your gas bill is higher, but you’re not using more
  • A hissing sound near gas pipes
  • The gas meter moves when all gas appliances are off

Gas leak detection and repair

We pressure-test your gas lines to confirm whether there is a leak, pinpoint where it is and repair it, then retest to show the system is sound.
